Canada will be 140 Sunday
By Bill Rea
Sunday is going to be a big day, as Canada marks the 140th anniversary of Confederation.
Celebrating is going to start early that morning, as York - Simcoe MP Peter Van Loan hosts his annual "Olde-Fashioned Dominion Day" Pancake Breakfast. It will be at Churchill Community Centre, at 6322 Yonge St. in Churchill, from 8:30 until 11 a.m. Admission is free.
"Sir John A. Macdonald, our first Prime Minister, built a country of freedom, hope and opportunity," Van Loan commented. "Canada is still a country where we can dream great dreams, and work to make those dreams come true. Let's Celebrate on July 1."
The evening will see the traditional Canada Day celebration hosted by the Kettleby Village Association (KVA) at Tyrwhitt Park.
Things will start at 6 p.m. with games like soccer and croquet, as well as a barbecue. KVA board member Gary Vogan said families are also encouraged to pack a picnic basket "and go down and have a gathering in the park.
There will also be a looney auction, starting at 7, to help defray the costs, and there will be a birthday cake cutting at 8, followed by the singing of O Canada.
The day will conclude with a fireworks display, which Vogan said will likely get started at about 10 p.m., when it's dark enough. He added the Township will be providing two volunteer firefighters to set off the display, which should last 20 to 25 minutes.
