Former Georgina mayor remembered

York Regional council recently remembered Robert Johnston, a former member of council and mayor of Georgina, who died April 6.

Mr. Johnston sat on Regional council for two terms, from 1988 to 1994.

He was very active during his terms, sitting on numerous committees, including community services, health and the York County Hospital Board.

Regional Chairman Bill Fisch mentioned Mr. Johnston's contributions were significant and definitely made a difference to the Region.

"Bob was quite a character," Councillor Danny Wheeler of Georgina recalled, pointing out he had also been a local reported and editor.

"He chastised council for just about everything it did," he added. "It was a good lesson in media relations."

"The world's not a better place without him," Wheeler concluded.
