A little serenity in King City is sure nice to see There have been two meetings in as many weeks, dealing with controversial issues in King City. And while there are still strong opinions being expressed, sometimes with passion, there has been little in the way of anger or acrimony. In this village, that's a very welcome development. Last Tuesday, people gathered for an update on the new water supply being studied for King City. Now in the last couple of months, it has become clear that York Region officials are planning to pipe water from Lake Ontario, rather than take it directly from the ground. Some people in the community don't like that idea, and fair enough. They were evidently led to believe that this source of surface water was not being considered, and so they were less than pleased when it appeared on the table. Like anyone else, these people get a bit suspicious when they see a situation change, and there are some who still fear the prospect of excessive development in the community. This has been their underlying fear all along, and while we don't think this is likely, it is still right for these people to be concerned and watchful. But the nice thing is the concerns are being presented in reasoned and controlled manners. While the passion is still evident, the anger that characterized meetings regarding the sewers a couple of years ago was hard to spot. And speaking of sewers, there was a drop-in session in the village Monday night to update people on the work being planned for this year. The event was well attended. Some 30 people signed up at the door and there were probably more there who didn't register. Yet several people at the meeting remarked at how quiet things were. People had questions about their own properties, and how the sewer installation might impact on things like trees and driveways. There were a noticeable number of smiles in the room, and frowns were hard to spot. That's a hopeful sign. Things are getting better in King City. For that matter, they are better. |
