St. Paul's Church

Join us this Sunday (June 3) at 9:45 a.m. as we welcome Cory Ball to the pulpit.

Nursery care (for children five and under) is provided during the service and Sunday school for all ages follows at 11 a.m.

The women will be meeting this Tuesday (June 5) for quilting at 9:30 a.m. They are always happy to welcome new quilters.

For more information about any of our events, or to find out about the many small group studies that take place during the week, please contact the church office at (905) 859-0843.

Horticultural

"What's new pussycat?" Now that, hopefully, the frost danger is passed I've started planting seeds and annuals outdoors.

Diascia, a flower recently introduced to Ontario, is a wonderful addition to any garden. Diascias or twin spurs are actually perennials native to southern Africa, but used as annuals in our area. They do winter over in south coast British Columbia, many parts western Europe and the U.S. I found two or three came back in my garden this spring because of our relatively mild winter.

This compact little plant, which grows about one foot high and the same wide, is ideal for the front of the border or the rockery, and once established, it's easy to care for. Don't be fooled by the delicate flowers. They don't need to be dead headed as this is one "tough cookie" that is drought resistant and does well in a sunny place with average soil.

Diascias come in pink, rose, apricot and brick red (I think there is a near white as well). Give this delightful plant some tender loving care for the first week or so after planting, and it will reward you right up into mid fall.

Now if the wheelbarrow doesn't run off with the watering can while the hollyhocks aren't looking (does anyone remember the Uncle Wiggly stories from back in the 1940s?), I'll tell you next time about an attractive new perennial to our region that's easy to grow. I'll look for you here.

Nobleton library

The annual spring tea will be held at the Nobleton, Schomberg and King City libraries next Friday (June 8) at 2:30 p.m.

All are welcome to attend for some light refreshments and entertainment.

Father's Day is fast approaching. The Nobleton Library will be having a Father's Day program for children aged five to 12 (younger with caregiver) June 9, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at a cost of $2 per child. Please pre-register at the library for this fun program.

The annual book sale will take place at all of the King Township Public Library branches from June 15 to 30 in regular business hours. This is an annual fund-raising event for the library. There will be bargains for everyone.

Thanks to all who visited us at our booth Victoria Day. The winners of the draw were: DVD's - Ona H. who guessed 340 minutes (the correct total was 343 minutes), children's books - Victoria Z. who guessed 859 pages (the correct total was 865 pages), adult books - John L. who guessed 1392 pages (the correct answer was 1467) and candy - Tony B. who guessed 153 candies and the correct total was 169.

St. Mary CWL

The annual St. Mary Catholic Women's League (CWL) potluck for all members will be held June 12 at 6:30 p.m. All ladies are welcome.

It is being held at the same place as our meetings, at the Nobleton Community Hall.

Just a reminder that the raffle tickets for the upcoming fall tea will be given out to each and every member to sell, and that tickets for the actual tea will be available for purchase as in previous years.

The CWL would like to thank all who baked cakes for the Victoria Day cake sale, as well as those who helped sell raffle tickets that day as well.

Tennis

Nobleton Tennis Club's season opening luncheon and social will be June 6, starting at noon.

All members are welcome, and are asked to RSVP by May 31. A light lunch will be provided by the club.

For information, call Tania Leslie at (905) 939- 0635.
