Cold Creek Day will be June 9

There's going to be plenty of features and information available June 9 at Cold Creek Forest and Wildlife Area

The third annual Cold Creek Day is a project of the stewardship committee of the 500-acre facility.

Cold Creek Day celebrates a new chapter in the area history since King Township Parks Recreation and Culture agreed to accept the management and operation of it.

"We are excited to add Cold Creek to our venue of children's programs this summer," commented department director Catherine Purcell.

The committee has planned a full day of activities for visitors from neighbouring and distant communities.

"Previous years, we have hosted 300 to 500 guests from King, Caledon, Toronto and other nearby towns," said Gordon Craig, stewardship president.

"Free-flight hawks and owls from the Canadian Raptor Conservancy will be back this year" reported Stewardship event organizer Jim Scott. "The York Retriever Field Club will demonstrate a typical dog trial; the York Regional Police Canine Unit will exhibit search and rescue techniques; trail tours will be conducted; the bog boardwalk will be open; our King Township arborist will outline tree and shrub maintenance, and other local environmental groups will be showcasing their projects."

A children's photo fair is a new addition this year. There were 1,228 jelly beans at Victoria Day

Starlight Events, organizers of Movies on the Lawn at the Nobleton Sports Park and Arena, held a jelly bean count at the Nobleton Victoria Day Celebrations last Monday.

Though it may seem simple enough, Andrea Kollo of Starlight thought people may want to ask those who agonized over the number of jelly beans in the pot how easy it really was. For anyone interested, she said the magic number was 1,228 (three less than the original count because someone, who won't be mentioned, thought they were for eating).

There were147 guesses.

The winner of a TEAC radio, alarm clock, iPod Dock and seasons passes to Movies on the Lawn with 1,236 was K. Ritson; and with 1,250 and winner of the pot, plus seasons passes to Movies on the Lawn, was C. Round. Families are invited to bring their digital cameras and each child's favourite nature photo taken at Cold Creek will be printed and displayed for the day.

The gates will open at 10 a.m. and events begin at 11, with a cash barbecue available throughout the day. There will be a $5 admission per car to cover event costs and Stewardship projects for the year.

Additional information on Cold Creek Day and the stewardship is available at www.ColdCreek.org.

Cold Creek Forest and Wildlife Area is on the 11th Concession (between Nobleton and Bolton) 3.5 kilometres north of King Road.
