Horticulture

"There's no business like flower show business," and we want you to make it your business to come to your Nobleton - King City Horticultural Society's May meeting and flower show this coming Monday (May 28) at 8 p.m. (flower show exhibitors must have entries correctly carded and in place by 7:30p.m.) in Nobleton's Community Hall on Old King Road just north of the arena complex.

The theme and premiere entry in the show is Celebration. The guest speaker is well known flower arranger Shirley Binns, who will share her expertise with those present.

A couple of people who live nearby and refer to the old adage of wait until after May 24 to plant annuals and seeds as nothing but a quaint country myth are now waiting to replace their frost killed flowers. May we say they "mythed" the point, and that is Mother Nature has her own timetable and which often conflicts with the "I'll do it my way" life style. Mother Nature can sharply remind us that despite what we want, she is still in charge. Myth or not, it's wise in our area,to wait until the last week in May or even the first of June before planting annuals and/or seeds. Even though garden centres and nurseries have annuals and tender perennials for sale around the beginning of May, they won't guarantee them against frost.

Seniors' euchre

May 15 euchre winners were Cathy Kiekebelt, Laura Seager, Vivian Hannah, Bill Groombridge, Paula Latanville and Lou Curtis. That was our last afternoon euchre for the season. We are planning a buffet lunch at Mandarin for May 29.
