Old Sleepers close out the hockey season in Schomberg
The annual Old Sleepers' tournament featured 16 men's teams divided in four divisions from the Schomberg area and beyond. In the Old Sleepers' division, the Regulators from Schomberg ended up on top of the heap, dropping the Outcasts from Schomberg and Richmond Hill 7-3 in the final match. The Regulators cruised their way through the tournament, dropping the Blades from Tottenham 9-6, then blanking the Outcasts 5-0. Their third match was their closest of the weekend, a they ended up edging the Old Boys from Schomberg 3-2. The early loss to the Regulators was the low point of the tournament for the Outcasts, who posted a 4-1 win at the expense of the Old Boys, then they edged the Blades 6-5. The Old Boys prevailed 9-4 in their encounter with the Blades.
The Whalers never had to taste defeat once over the weekend. They started things off with a 5-2 win over the Sooters from Schomberg, then dropped the Networks with a 6-4 verdict. Their toughest test came from the Mules, from the Schomberg area, who held them to a 4-4 draw. The Networks posted a couple of solid wins on the way to the finals, doubling the Mules 6- 3 and downing the Sooters 7-2. The Mules bested the Sooters 4-2 in their match. It wasn't until the championship game in the Rick Archibald division that a team was able to get more than one goal against the Schomberg area Nighthawks. The Roy Foss squad from Richmond Hill scored twice, but that only meant the Nighthawks' margin of victory was 4-2. The Hawks opened the tournament with their most solid win, a 7-0 thumping of the Elders from Bradford. They then handed a 3-1 decision to the Stingers from Beeton, and followed that by dropping Roy Foss 4-1. The Foss crew was able to get to the finals with a 4-2 win over the Stingers, followed by a 2-1 victory over the Elders. The Stingers also beat the Elders 2-1 when they faced each other. The Roy Foss division saw the closest final match in the tournament, with two outfits from Beeton battling it out for all the marbles. In the end, the Henry Carr club got by the Old Macks 2-1. These were two evenlymatched to make it to the final outing, having battled to a 2-2 tie in preliminary action. The Carr guys beat the team from Oro 4-1, then topped the Thunder from Toronto 2-1. The Macks blanked the Thunder 3-0, and downed Oro 6-4. The Thunder doubled Oro 4-2 in their match. |
