King's Corners
King Bible Church reaching out to help AIDS sufferers in Ethiopia

King Bible Church

King Bible Church will host an evening of music, food, information and encouragement: Hope for Africa May 12 at 6 p.m.

The main purpose of the evening will be to raise funds for the AIDS relief work of Serving in Missions (SIM) in Ethiopia. According to the United Nations, "AIDS has become the most devastating disease mankind has ever faced," but there is hope through the work of organizations like SIM. All proceeds from this evening will go to SIM for their Hope for AIDS project in Ethiopia.

The evening will open with punch and smooth jazz by the DB Quartet, followed by dinner including Ethiopian entrees. After dinner, guests will be entertained by music from the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Toronto youth - The Joseph Generation Army.

The keynote speaker for the evening will be Dr. Jane Philpott, who served with SIM in Africa for nine years.

She is passionate about creating awareness and raising funds for the AIDS crisis in Africa. To that end, she developed A Coin for Every Country, an educational program which has been implemented in York Region schools. Since 1998 she has been a family physician in Stouffville and is on staff at Markham Stouffville Hospital. She has a special interest in HIV primary care and is involved with the AIDS Committee of York Region, as well as the York Region Committee in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

This evening is open to anyone who is interested. There is no charge for the dinner and a free-will offering will be accepted. In order to assist with planning, guests will need to get their free tickets in advance by calling King Bible Church at (905) 833-5104 or by email to the church at hope4aids@kingbiblechurch .com

King Bible Church is at 1555 King Rd., just west of Dufferin.

"Jesus tells us to love our neighbours and in this global economy our neighbour is anyone who is suffering or in need anywhere in the world," commented Rev. Don Ballantyne, senior pastor at King Bible Church, is a key supporter of this initiative. "Many people have heard the statistics about AIDS, but it doesn't hit home until you hear some of the stories of child-headed households. We can show our love by helping the sick and orphaned. Last year this event raised over $12,000, all of which went directly to SIM. We hope to raise even more this year."

SIM is an international mission organization with more than 1,600 active missionaries serving in over 50 countries on five continents. SIM's heritage extends to organizations that started over 100 years ago and is a registered Canadian charity.
