Remembering my Dad, Wayne Dove It begins as a steady foundation, building layer upon layer until it is fully complete and stands tall and strong. Dodging waves as they crash upon the shore. A sandcastle, in many ways, represents the course of life. You first begin with the creation of a relationship with those closest to you and from this point build layer upon layer, using the skills and lessons you learn along the way. The challenges you face are the forceful waves you must stand strong against. The construction of one's life is what creates their identity and personal history. My father, in many ways, has taught me all of the skills for life in 19 short years. From the first time he held my hand to take my first step, to teaching me how to kick a soccer ball. He showed me how to be brave, as I watched him fight fires and save people's lives. He showed me how to laugh by always smiling. He showed me the meaning of family, how to love and how to care for others. Most of all, he showed me how to live; never wasting any time or taking anything for granted. Sandcastles do not last forever; they fight and persevere to stand strong against the crashing waves. but not every wave can be beat. My father built many layers of my life. He made me who I am and who I have yet to be. My sandcastle will continue to grow upon the strong foundation built for me. Wayne Dove died April 22, 2005. |
