What on earth are you doing? It's easy being green York Region is celebrating Earth Week this week. This year, more than six million Canadians and 500 million people in over 180 countries will participate in what is considered to be the largest global environmental event. York residents are encouraged to join in some of the activities. Earth Week displays, initiatives, contests and more will be set up at York Region Administrative Centre in Newmarket today (Wednesday), Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Residents are invited to visit the Great Hall of the administrative centre, at 17250 Yonge St. in Newmarket, to view informative displays and learn about the many environmental programs, studies and initiatives that the Region is currently undertaking to create a healthier environment, including anti-idling campaign, solid waste reduction, the 20/20 way to clean air, water conservation, pesticide reduction awareness and much more. Also on display, will be entries from the staff Earth Week photo contest. Each photo depicts the theme for the York Region 2007 Earth Week celebration, "What on earth are you doing? It's easy being green!" While at the administrative centre, visitors can pick up a tree seedling to plant in honour of Earth Week and test their knowledge by entering the Eco-trivia contest. Seedlings are available on a first come first served basis.
Everyone can make a difference in the health of the world. This year, residents are asked to consider the theme of "What on earth are you doing? It's easy being green!" Even small actions have great impact. Some things people can do at an individual level include: + Use a personal backyard composter or participate in municipal curb side composting programs. + When possible, walk, cycle or take public transit to work and leave the car at home. + Plant a tree or take a hike in a local forest. + Bring litterless lunches to work and school. |
