King Cavalry ends a successful hockey season The peewees made it to the quarter finals, but the bantams had a slightly rougher time of it. That's the way things went over the weekend for the two King Cavalry Girls' Hockey Association squads as they competed in the Ontario Women's Hockey Association 2007 Provincials. The peewee ladies showed they were able to keep up with their opponents, although actually getting the advantage over them proved another matter. They opened their tournament play Friday and battled the Peterborough Ice Kats to a scoreless tie. It looked like another draw was in the works that evening when they squared off against the Hamilton Hawks, but the Hamilton crew ruined that by notching the winning goal with 25 seconds left on the clock for the 2-1 win. The Cavalry needed overtime in their Saturday match against Ottawa to get into quarter finals, but they prevailed 3-2. It was in the quarter finals that ran into reality, dropping a 2-0 verdict to the crew from Windsor, who went on to take the gold. The weekend was somewhat less pleasant for the bantam Cavalry. They drew the Oakville Hornets as their opening game foes, and they were edged 2-1. Then they faced the Thunder Bay Queens, and were blanked 2-0. Saturday's outing was against the Sarnia Lady Sting, and the Sarnia ladies prevailed 4-1. The Girls from Thunder bay eventually took the gold. Both Cavalry teams competed in the North Metro Girls Hockey League over the season. After completing league play, both teams successfully won their respective playdowns to make it to the Provincials. The Cavalry is in its second year of operation, and is proud of the effort and commitment put forth from both the players and parents. These girls representing the Townships of King, Caledon, and New Tecumseh have enjoyed developing new friendships and reaping the benefits of dedicated teamwork. Looking forward to next season, the Cavalry will be operating player tryouts starting April 20. Girls interested in playing rep hockey for the Cavalry who are bantam age (born in 1993 or '94) are encouraged to attend the upcoming tryouts.
