King Township introduces new waste collection contractor Residents of King will be seeing new waste collection vehicles on local roads, starting May 1. The Northern Six Municipalities, consisting of King, as well as Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, Newmarket and Whitchurch-Stouffville, have joined forces and awarded a 10-year joint contract to Turtle Island Recycling for the collection of garbage, recycling, source separated organics (green bin) and yard waste, effective in September. Previously, each municipality had contracted for these services separately. By combining their efforts, there is a shared savings of $11 million over the next 10 years. The Township's current waste collection contract expires April 30, leaving a four-month gap in waste collection service prior to the Sept. 1 launch with Turtle Island. Township council has authorized Turtle Island to provide waste collection services for the interim period. The May 1 start by Turtle Island will allow the contractor to become familiar with the area before the start of the Northern Six contract, thereby making the transition to the green bin easier in the fall. Residents are asked to be patient during the transition to the new service provider. Between May 1 and Aug. 31, any resident with questions regarding waste collection may call Turtle Island Recycling on their toll-free line at 1-800-224- 5325. |
