Psssst! Avoid the 'goo' of google, Get a library card and get access!
Submitted by Murray McCabe Chief Executive Officer King Township Public Library

Okay, you've heard it a million times before.

This is "an information based economy," or perhaps you've heard the phrase "information rich."

Now I'm not selling snake oil, or Resdan for that matter. But I can tell you that the best deal on information in town can be found by visiting your local library in person or via the Internet.

The King Township Public Library has been offering access to a number of information-rich databases for years and believe it or not, the residents of King have just become richer.

The library is pleased to announce the birth of Knowledge Ontario, weighing in at 46-plus databases, and that will make a grand addition to any home, office, or school.

Not sure what a database is? Just look at your paper phone directory as one example.

Knowledge Ontario is a p r o v i n c i a l l y - f u n d e d initiative created by an inspired group of librarians with the financial assistance of the provincial government. The collection of databases is accessible through the library's Web site, www.king-library.on.ca (see "KO" under "Find Your Subject").

Once you locate this treasure trove, you will have access to information resources that include fulltext magazines, academic journals that document a wide range of interests. Included are databases dealing with health, law, military intelligence, gardening, parenting, business, and investments. This collection of licensed databases is needed by Ontarians daily. Whether it's a citizen seeking health information, a student working on a homework assignment, a researcher in a university lab or an entrepreneur looking for insight on a business venture, the product has it covered.

The list of databases is extensive. Sample titles include: Computers, Diversity Studies, Environmental Issues and Policy, Garden, Landscape

and Horticulture, General Science, Health and Wellness, Insurance and Liability, Psychology, Religion and Philosophy, and Small Business. Within these databases, individual titles are numerous and include such well known ones as Architectural Digest, Byte, Ecology, House and Garden, JAMA, Nature, Science. For the youngest members in our community try out the library's on-line story service "Tumble Books" featuring the ever popular Robert Munsch.

Stop wadding through the muck and goo of google and start finding quality answers to your questions by visiting the library.
