Horticulture

Submitted by John Arnott

The first meeting of Nobleton - King City Horticultural Society was held in the old community hall on old King Road in Nobleton March 27.

The meetings are held the fourth Monday of each month throughout the year at 8 p.m. Exhibitors must have entry cards and entries in place by 7:30 p.m. Note there is no meeting in July, but the society will host a tour of local private gardens July 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Speaker, Frank Kershaw, of Toronto gardens fame, talked about a number of variegated foliage plants and their requirements that can be used to brighten up shaded areas of the garden.

The flower show, with a Spring Awakens theme, included 71 entries by 10 exhibitors. Kathy Ball (Nobleton) had the most points overall, Barb Downey (Castlederg) came second and Nancy Hopkinson (Nobleton) was third. Hopkinson also won first with her intricate entry in the always challenging miniature category. Best in show, cultural, went to Tina Stone (King City) for her exquisite orchid. Best in show, decorative, was awarded to Barb Downey for her imaginative Scratch and Scrounge entry.

Attending society members who renewed their memberships received the 2007 show book.
