11 impaired charges for St. Patrick's

York Regional Police were out recently, looking for drivers who might have over-done the St. Patrick's Day celebrating.

The result was 11 motorists charged with impaired driving, and one of them was found at a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) spot check. The other 10 were picked up at regular patrols.

As well, there were two 12-hour licence suspensions handed out at spot checks.

RIDE stopped 1,750 vehicles over the weekend,

from 1,364 in last year's St. Patrick's Day campaign. There were 23 roadside tests conducted this year, as opposed to five last year. The 2006 campaign saw three 12-hour suspensions, but no impaired charged.

Police also praised the help they received from the public over the weekend. There were 12 calls to 9-1-1 reporting possible impaired drivers, and charges resulted from two of them.
