"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

On those couple of mild days last week that gave us the big melt, I walked around my garden checking to see if any plants or bulbs (especially small ones planted in the fall) had been heaved up by freezing and thawing over the winter. Any that were found were pushed gently back into the soil. But in one case, where the ground around the heaved plant was still hard, I covered the exposed roots with potting soil mixed with a bit of compost and lightly pressed it down.

Don't use soggy or muddy soil, as it will smother the roots. This type of garden check should be done a few times this month and next. Remember though, that the top of fleshy iris roots (rhizomes) need to show a little above ground so that the plant will bloom. Now is the time to buy and pot up tuberous begonias indoors for setting outdoors once the danger of late frosts has passed.
