Horticulture Submitted by John Arnott "How softly gentle spring doth tread." I've just received my 2007 seed catalogue from Thompson and Morgan, the famed British seedsmen. It contains some 200 colourful pages of annual and perennial seeds available from them through their American operation with a Canadian address, care of Thompson and Morgan, PO Box 1051, Fort Erie, Ontario. L2A 6C7. The catalogue makes fascinating reading, even if you don't order any seeds. Call toll free 800-274-7333 to get a copy. You can get them on-line at w w w . t h o m p s o n - morgan.com The 2007 edition of Canada Blooms featured a great exhibit of perennial and annual introductions new this year. Annuals that caught my eye are a shorter grow in (about three feet in height) pink cleome--spider flower named Senorita Rosita and a white one Frost. Both are excellent for back of the border or as focal points in big planters. Among the new perennials, I was impressed with a coral bell (heuchera) called Paris, a spurge (euphorbia), Diamond Frost and a very double gaillardia blanket flower Dakota. Be sure to watch for the new Canadian-developed rose series named Canadian painters. Emily Carr is an absolutely stunning single burgundy, while Felix Leclerc is a lovely clear rosy pink with a white throat. Both these roses and in fact the whole series are well suited to Canadian gardens. What do you know about lachenalias? Meet me here next week and we'll compare notes. Happy St. Patrick's Day to all.
