'The Dairy Cow' was theme of the Schomberg farm tour

There was lots to see and learn about the dairy industry from four local operations Saturday as the Schomberg Agricultural Society hosted its third annual farm tour. The Dairy Cow was the theme this year. Taras Rawlinson, 3, of Toronto met a new friend at Rexlea Jerseys, which is run by the Sheardowns on the 8th Concession. Jessica Heenan, 9, of Acton was making friends with one of the cows at Mount Kolb Dairy Farm. Maclaren and Rylie Ann Broad from Newmarket joined their Nobleton area grandparents on the tour, and this banner showed they were right into the spirit of the occasion. Zoe Simmons, 6, of Nobleton was offering some food to this young calf at Dandyland Holsteins. This young Holstein and Michael Vanya, 3, of Tottenham weren't sure what to make of each other when they met at the O'Hara family farm at Dandyland Holsteins. A couple of the farms on the tour had newborn calves, and visitors had the chance to suggest names for them, including this this cute little Holstein at Everdale Farm. Rexlea Jerseys was also offering people the chance to name one of their new calves, and Takara Jones, 8, of Schomberg was thinking up a name for this newborn. 1.The Rexlea jersey calf naming contest. The top calf will be named Everdale Allen Delaney, as chosen by Caroline Barker, while the Rexlea calf will be known as Rexlea Jad Juniper. Kaitlin Peel of Lisle chose that name. York Region's Queen of the Furrow 2006 Anikka Bolender from Stouffville was on hand at Rexlea Saturday. Chantelle Oostwoud, 12, of Schomberg and James Scott, 8, of Beeton were examining the feed given to cows at Everdale Farm. Elizabeth Darrach and her three-year-old daughter Hannah traveled from Queensville for the tour. They are seen checking out some of the inhabitants of Mount Kolb Dairy Farm in nearby Albion.
