Laidlaw wants to put brakes on Jake brakes

Jake brakes, or engine brakes, on trucks create a lot of noise, and Councillor Jeff Laidlaw wants their use curtailed, at least in King's village cores.

He has put forth a notice of motion, slated to be debated when council meets again this coming Monday (March 19), calling on their use to be restricted through a bylaw.

The preamble of the motion pointed out many of the more heavily travelled roads in King run through or near residential areas, and "alternative routes of travel for truck traffic in King Township (are) seemingly many years down the road."

It also stated other municipalities have seen the problem and responded by posting signs and employing random enforcement.

He said they create a "huge racket."

The motion also calls on the Township's operations department to post the appropriate signs and that York Regional Police be asked to enforce the bylaw "as they are able."
