St. Mary's Catholic

Women's League

The St. Mary's Catholic Women's League is hosting a Lenten evening lecture this coming Tuesday (March 13) at 7 p.m. at Nobleton Community Hall. The speaker will be Father Carlos from St. Andrew's Church on the subject of the Art of Forgiveness. We encourage everyone to attend, including parents and their kids. All are welcome to hear this worthwhile speaker touch our lives on an art that is often forgotten or very difficult to master.

Nobleton Women's

Institute

To all those who came to the York Centre District Women's Institute's luncheon and euchre Feb. the 27, we send thanks.

It was well attended, especially with weather conditions. We had 74. The food, the door prizes and draws for the five lovely grocery baskets were really enjoyed by all. Most of the ladies and gentlemen enjoyed their euchre game.

The next Nobleton WI meeting will be March 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Nobleton Community Hall, 19 Old King Rd. The Roll Call will be "Name a possible home hazard." The Motto will be "Education is for life."

A very interesting meeting is planned by Elizabeth Douglas and Bernice Tasca. This month, the topic will be diabetes, a subject and condition that healthwise we should all be aware of. Pharmacist Trenda Manderson from the Nobleton Pharmasave drug store will be the guest speaker for the presentation on diabetes.

Ladies of the community, do join us for this very important presentation. All ages are welcome.

Members are needed to carry on with our 100th anniversary observances in 2008.

WI members are extremely anxious to know what is to become of our beloved Community Hall.

WI has many Histories of Nobleton still on hand for $10. Please buy one.

Seniors' euchre

Feb. 27 euchre winners were Carol Sharer, Dorie Watson, Barb Salisbury, Mary Bullock, Carol Burbidge, Murray Hilliard, Bob Sharer and John Burbidge. Lucky draw winners were Walter Bell, Bernice Tasca and Hazel Harris. The next euchre will be March 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Drop-in Centre. All are welcome.

Many thanks to the Women's Institute for their annual lunch and euchre. The lunch was plentiful and delicious. We really enjoyed it and look forward to next year.

Horticulture

Submitted by John Arnott

"It might as well be spring"

The lengthening daylight hours signal to plants, especially those with growing parts above the ground, that the new growing season is at hand (interesting that "lencten" the old Anglo- Saxon word for spring gave us our word length, lengthen and of course Lent).

As March begins, houseplants that have been dormant over winter start to grow. This is the time to water them more often, slowly increase the amount given and add small amounts of fertilizer. This is also a good time to re-pot in fresh soil any plants that may need it. If you think the plant needs more room, just go one pot size bigger. Remember however, some plants, such as clivia, must be potbound before they will bloom.

March is the month that the Nobleton and King City Horticultural Society begins its new season with its first 2007 meeting. It will be March 26 at 8 p.m. at Nobleton Community Hall, with popular horticulturist Frank Kershaw as guest speaker.

By the way, look for the society's planter entry in the Success With Gardening Show at the International Centre on Airport Road March 15 to 18.

See you at Canada Blooms this week.
