King's Corners All Saints' Anglican Church Submitted by Claire Alexander In February, All Saints' Anglican Church enjoyed sharing special events with the community. Caribbean Party Time warmed the spirit with lots of music and mounds of spicy food, thanks to many helpers. The King City Glassford Alexander family led the beat of the evening with their singing (and cooking). A steel band had everyone dancing around the tables, keeping time to gospel music and Oh, Happy Day. Look out for next year's winter party - a new theme each year! "Amazing Grace" Sunday was observed internationally, remembering John Newton's hymn, written after being a slave trader, and William Wilberforce's efforts 200 years ago to abolish slavery in Britain. Nicola Skinner's sermon challenged us with the 27 million still in slavery today. Once again, Shrove Tuesday saw the wonderful kitchen team serve pancakes and delectable Italian sausages to tables full of hungry people and excited children streaming in. Now during Lent, each Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m., Rev. Skinner will lead us in the Chapel in Taize songs, prayers and a brief meditation. Lent devotional booklets are available for $3. Join us Sundays in March in the chapel at 8 a.m., or for the full Sunday Eucharist at 10:30 a.m., with a nursery and Sunday school. Refreshments follow, allowing time to ask questions and to make new friends. Abeautiful musical choral evensong takes place March 18 at 7:30 p.m., under Michael Leach, director of music. All Saints' is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, so do help us contact old friends. The church is located at 12935 Keele St. in King City, a few doors south of King Road. Call the church office at (905) 833- 5432 to make an appointment, or to request prayer for a special need. King City United Church Submitted by Dave Jeanneret King City United Church is a vibrant, caring community, and warmly invites one and all to our 10 a.m. worship service led by the Rev. Bob Biggar every Sunday, and to our Sunday school, followed by fellowship and refreshments. We are located one block south of King Road and one block east of Keele Street at 50 Elizabeth Grove. Rev. Biggar's sermon reflection for March 4 will be What Language Does God Speak?, and is based on Genesis 11:1-9 and Acts 2:1- 12. There will be an opportunity to gather in the parlour following the service to explore the morning's sermon in depth through dialogue with the Minister and with each other. This year's Lenten study will examine the last week of Jesus' ministry according to the Gospel of John, and will be offered by the minister Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 to 3 p.m. All are most welcome. Our Youth Groups are open to all youth in Grades 4 to 9, and provide a safe environment for the enjoyment of activities. March 2, the Youth Groups will be hosting a Pizza and Movie evening at the church from 6 to 9 p.m. For information on further upcoming activities, please call Serena or Kent at (905) 833-2707. While planning your calendar, keep March 16 in mind as the church will be hosting a St. Patrick's Day dinner, complete with music and entertainment, starting at 6:30 p.m. Either adult or family tickets may be reserved by calling (905) 833-0473 or the church office. The King City United Church choir would still very much like to welcome additional members. We know you would enjoy both the music and the fellowship. Rehearsals are Thursday evenings for about an hour from 8 p.m. Please come and join us. For further information regarding activities, please call the church at (905) 833- 5181 or, for a more detailed view of life at King City United Church, we encourage you to visit our regularly updated Web site at www.kcuc.ca Our office is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you wish to insert a news item in this weekly column, please call Dave Jeanneret at (905) 833-5696, or e-mail jeanned@interlog. com |
