Next contemporary service will usher in Lent at King City United

All Saints' Anglican

Church

As always, you are welcome to come and join us for any of our services.

On Sundays we have a quiet and prayerful Eucharist in the Chapel at 8 a.m. Our main service with Eucharist, wonderful music and choir is at 10:30 a.m. Sunday school and nursery care are always available at the 10:30 a.m. service. Drinks, great food and fellowship always follow in the Church Hall.

The season of Lent begins today (Ash Wednesday) with a service at 7:30 p.m.

Lent is a time for us to prepare our hearts for Easter and is often a time when we take on a spiritual discipline or try to exercise self-control by giving something up. Lenten booklets are available at the Church for anyone who would like one. They contain daily reflections on Scripture readings written by members of local Anglican churches. Pop in and pick one up.

Every Wednesday during Lent there will be a Taize service at 7:30 p.m. Taize is an ecumenical community in France, well-known for its meditative way of prayer and chanting. The chants are easy to learn and repeated regularly. Come and join us, and take some time away from the business of life.

This year, we are proud to be celebrating our 150th anniversary and we hope that you will join us at a whole series of events to be offered during the year. Keep your eye on this column.

All Saints' is located at 12935 Keele St. in King City, a few doors south of King Road. The church office is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Call us at (905) 833- 5432 to make an appointment, for event tickets, or to request prayer for a special need. Rev. Nicola Skinner and members of the congregation look forward to seeing you!

Seniors'

euchre

There was a tie for first place among the ladies at the Feb. 9 session of euchre at the King City Seniors' Centre. Jennifer Merritt and Joyce Glass each had 69, followed by Dorothy Gillies (66) and Rena Gordon (51). At the men's tables, Jack Wear was helped by eight lone hands as he led the way with 75, followed by Cliff Kettlewell and Anne warner (69) and Vic Warner (51).

The draw winners were Dianne Wear, Rena Gordon and Cliff Kettlewell.

The next euchre evening will be Feb. 23, starting at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome. King City United Church

King City United Church is a vibrant, caring community, and warmly invites one and all to our 10 a.m. worship service led by the Rev. Bob Biggar every Sunday, and to our Sunday school, followed by fellowship and refreshments.

We are located one block south of King Road and one block east of Keele Street at 50 Elizabeth Grove.

Rev. Biggar's sermon reflection for Feb. 25 will be "How much is enough?", and is based on Luke 4:1-13. There will be an opportunity to gather in the parlour following the service to explore the morning's sermon in depth through dialogue with the minister and with each other.

February 25 is also our lucky 13th Contemporary Service and will feature soloists and our very musical Sunday School Choir.

Our Youth Groups are open to all youth in Grades 4 to 9, and provide a safe environment for the enjoyment of activities. The Youth Groups will be hosting a Pizza and Movie evening March 3 at the church from 6 to 9 p.m. For information on further upcoming activities, please call Serena or Kent at (905) 833-2707.

This year's Lenten study will examine the last week of Jesus' ministry according to the Gospel of John, and will be offered by the minister Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 to 3 p.m., beginning Feb. 27. All are most welcome.

While planning your calendar, keep March 16 in mind as the church will be hosting an Irish Dinner, complete with entertainment, starting at 5 p.m.

The King City United Church choir and Director of Music Rosemary Karunaratne would still very much like to welcome additional members. We know you would enjoy both the music and the fellowship. Rehearsals are Thursday evenings for about an hour from 8 p.m. Please come and join us.

For further information regarding activities, please call (905) 833-5181 or, for a more detailed view of life at King City United Church, we encourage you to visit our regularly updated Web site at www.kcuc.ca

The church office is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Contemporary service

King City United welcomes Lent with a contemporary music celebration this Sunday (Feb. 25) at 10 a.m.

If you think that church is the "same old thing," then check out King City United this Sunday. The church will be beginning the Easter season "Making a Joyful Noise unto the Lord". The KCUC Praise Band, which features guitar, bass, drum kit, keyboards and vocal soloists will be leading the congregation in upbeat, celebratory music.

The congregation is looking forward to the integration of the Sunday School Choir in this Sunday's service. The service is multi-generational - the music upbeat - reminding all of the upcoming Easter season. The Bible lessons will be presented through a children's format and an adult focused homily. Reverend Bob makes the Word (this Sunday, Luke 4: 1-13 - The Temptation of Jesus) both relevant and applicable to one's modern fast paced life. His message is entitled "What do we really need? - How much is enough? All are invited and welcome.

This service is King City United's 13th, and the two year anniversary of contemporary services at the church. They were envisioned by Gary Hubbard, long time member of the congregation, active musician and full-time accountant. Gary, along with the tremendous musical talents of David and Marianne Kennedy, young singing sensation Amy Mills, the keyboard strengths of Serena Edmunds and percussive sounds of Larry Sinka and Manet Manning, have continued to make this vision a reality and a regular part of worship for the greater King community every six weeks at KCUC. David Kennedy, bassist for the Praise Band, will be adding a new sound, playing his guitar this Sunday and incorporating a distortion pedal!

The music will include modern arrangements of traditional and new tunes, and will be part of an upbeat Christian celebration.

All are welcome. A nursery will be provided for the very young. We hope the community and those seeking a church home or simply want to take time to reflect on the Christmas season, will support this type of service and will join us in what we know will be a high energy, respectful and meaningful relationship with God.
