Horticulture Submitted by John Arnott "Doves and cupids, with hearts of red, And sweet roses fair, Make a lovely valentine, Declaring love is everywhere. (Mala Powers) With a little care flowers, being given or received, will live longer. The end of cut flower stems will begin to scab over, preventing water and nutrients from being absorbed. If a thin slice of this end is cut off with a sharp knife or sharp secatures (pruners), this problem is prevented. Japanese gardeners always cut these ends underwater. If you decide to rearrange your flowers then once the ends are cut put these bare stems in about 12 centimeters (five inches) of hot water bearable to the hand (protect any close foliage/blooms by wrapping) and stand in a cool non freezing place for half an hour. This forces air out of the stems and fresh water in to replace it. Never allow any foliage or blooms to be underwater as this will cause decay, wilt and a foul smell! When you use the tiny packet of flower conditioner that many florists include with flowers, the water in your vase won't need changing for four or five days. This solution not only feeds, but controls bacteria growth and keeps the water clear. Dissolve the contents in half a litre or a quart of luke warm water and add it to a standard sized vase/container, filling the remaining space with plain warm water (if the vase is smaller, add less of the solution). If no solution is used, the water should be changed every day or every other day to prolong the life of the flowers. A tablespoon of sugar plus a few (three or four) drops of bleach will substitute for the commercial floral solution. Despite all our best efforts, some flowers do wilt. But before they become compost, try one more thing. Recut stems underwater then put bare part of stems in 15 cm (six inches) of hot water for 30 minutes. This works with roses. Another trick is to submerge the "wilters" stem, leaves, blooms and all in a basin or tub of cool (not really cold) water for a few hours or even overnight. Enjoy your bouquet - Happy St. Valentine's Day.
