King City

Seniors' Centre Submitted by Hans Nielsen

The King City Senior's Centre recently held its annual general meeting.

The meeting started with a moment of silence in memory of long-time board member, the centre's property manager and rental agent, Peter Henshall who suddenly passed away recently. Peter was remembered as a friend to all at the centre and a volunteer to many causes, be it at the centre, the ham radio club and the Pilots Association where he was the longtime secretary. He was an aviation buff and pilot who at one time built his own plane. Peter will be missed by all in the community. His daily trip to the Post Office with a side trip to the centre to check it out and his willingness to share time to reminisce about times gone by will be remembered.

It was reported that the centre again had a very successful year, with many programs on the go and the social events well attended with the hall filled to capacity.

Those elected to the board of management for 2007, subject to appointment by Township council, were Vince Cancelli, chairman; Connie Inouye, secretary; Iain McDougall, treasurer; and Fred Beaton (Lions Club), Jack Brooks, Joan Dowden, Carol Field, Joyce Glass, Rena Gordon, Marie Rattray and Betty Simmonds.

The inaugural meeting is scheduled for Jan. 16 at 9:30 a.m.

The guest speaker was Bert Duclos, from the Township of King Heritage Committee, who gave a very interesting and informative talk and power-point presentation about the old heritage sites in King. Duclos has put an enormous amount of time into this project and it is to his credit that the Township has a heritage map that all the citizens of King can be proud of.

The afternoon ended with a social get-together over a cup of tea, coffee and sweets with many friendly chats. All had a most enjoyable afternoon.

For more information about the centre, please call 905-833-2824 (answering machine).
