Nobleton residents didn't have to wait too long to see what the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) thought of the Slokker Canada proposal for the northwest quadrant of the village, and there wasn't much room for debate when the ruling came down.
"In 25 years of practicing law in the area of land development, in both the public and private sectors, and in serving on this board for nine years, this member has never (the word "never" was underlined) seen a housing proposal as exciting, dynamic and offering so much that is in the public interest as this proposal by Slokker Canada Corp." was the way hearing officer J.R. Boxma opened his report, and he followed it up by heaping praise on the work that Slokker had done.
Several observers said they had never seen such a statement in a document like this, let alone at the top.
Slokker intends to develop a 698-unit subdivision with a plan that was hammered out after a lengthy community liaison process the previous summer. Although members of the community liaison committee were split on whether to support it, the proposal was approved by Township council that fall, and was subject of an approximately four-week hearing.

To support the Canadian women's hockey team, the girls made this good luck banner, which was sent to the team's Calgary training facility in February. Mayor Margaret Black was on hand as the banner was displayed by the team. |

Opposition to the proposal came from Nobleton Alert Residents Association, as well as two other participants, and Boxma indicated he didn't think much of the position put forth by Alert.
"The 'case' called by the Nobleton Alert was fraught with difficulties," he stated bluntly in his report (the word "case" actually appearing in quotation marks in the report).
Not surprisingly, Nobleton Alert spokespeople were less than pleased.
"Nobleton Alert Residents Association Inc. is extremely disappointed by the OMB ruling regarding the Slokker subdivision for Nobleton, a decision which gives full approvals for 698 homes," they declared in a press release. "We expected that the chairman would explain the issues, give a brief summary of the points made by the various parties and then make a ruling. This did not happen."

It was not just Ansnorveldt residents who were losing the convenience of having their mail delivered to private boxes in front of their homes.
Canada Post spokesperson Scott Lewis reported the situation was more widespread, affecting some 900 customers living in four rural routes of Newmarket. These people were transferred to group mailboxes too.

There were five potential areas around the Holland Marsh being eyed by Hydro One for a new transmission station, and Mayor Black was hoping the one spot in East Gwillimbury would get the nod.
Four of the areas being eyed were in King, and Black pointed out they were all on a floodplain.
"In Hurricane Hazel, all of these sites were covered by water," she told Hydro staff. "There were houses floating away."
Project Manager Lake Singh said they were aware of the floodplain concerns and they were being addressed in the site evaluation.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper unveiled his first cabinet, and it did not include long-time Conservative and York - Simcoe MP Peter Van Loan.
Despite that, he said he wasn't too disappointed, pointing out Harper had a lot of people hoping for a limited number of positions.
"I don't envy Mr. Harper's role," he remarked, likening the situation to that faced by players on a sports team. "Everyone wants to be a starter, but you do the job you're asked to do."

The Schomberg Cougars finished fifth in the Georgian Mid-Ontario division of the Ontario Hockey Association, and drew the Erin Shamrocks as their first-round opponents in the playoffs.
The team had a great start to their best-of-seven series with the Shamrocks, as goalie Calum McCullough posted the first shutout in years for the team.
But that's where the good news ended, as Erin took the next four games and eliminated the Cougars in five.
