York and NCC celebrate Peggy's Wood property donation
      Representatives from York Region, East Gwillimbury, Newmarket and the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) joined members of the Dunlap family Friday to celebrate the donation of the 18-hectare (43-acre) Peggy's Wood property.

Three-stream waste collection is set to start in September
      King Township, along with Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, Newmarket and Whitchurch-Stouffville - the northern six (N6) municipalities of York Region - have joined forces to roll-out the most significant waste diversion program since the introduction of the blue box in the 1980s.

Mixed reaction to McGuinty's promise of no tax hikes
      As in the 2003 election, Dalton McGuinty is promising there will be no tax increases if his Liberals form the next government. Unlike 2003, he's vowing to keep that promise this time. The pledge was made last week as McGuinty addressed the party faithful, and local Liberals are confident he's going to be able to keep the promise.

WRITER SIGNS OFF
     King Township Public Library's Writer in Residence program has come to an end. It was concluded last Wednesday with writer Sharon Jennings reading one last story to children at the King City library. "This program has absolutely been terrific," declared Library CEO Murray McCabe. "You've been absolutely the perfect host for the program."

Helena Jaczek is Liberal candidate in Oak Ridges - Markham
      York Region's former medical officer of health is taking another stab at provincial politics. Dr. Helena Jaczek was recently acclaimed as the Liberal candidate in Oak Ridges - Markham for the up-coming provincial election. Jaczek, 56, carried the party's flag in Oak Ridges in the 2003 election, finishing second to Progressive Conservative Frank Klees.

Former Georgina mayor remembered
      York Regional council recently remembered Robert Johnston, a former member of council and mayor of Georgina, who died April 6. Mr. Johnston sat on Regional council for two terms, from 1988 to 1994. He was very active during his terms, sitting on numerous committees, including community services, health and the York County Hospital Board.
