"Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread and pumpkin cake." (Jim Davies)

The Nobleton and King City Horticultural Society held its awards dinner and annual general meeting Nov. 27 at Nobleton Community Hall.

The event started with a social hour, followed by a very delicious potluck supper.

Veteran gardener and life member, John Arnott, as usual dressed in his kilt (his grandmother's tartan), said grace. Guest, Bert Card, toasted the Queen and led the large crowd in singing O Canada. President Kate Agosta, introduced the head table and guests.

In attendance as guest was Brenda Heenan, director of District 15 of the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA), of which Nobleton/King is a member. She bought greetings from the Association and complimented the Society on its achievements this past year.

Other members of the head table were Mary Sasiela, assistant director of Dist. 15, in charge of York West; Bert Card, past director of Dist. 15, and past-president of OHA and his wife Joan; and former president of the Richmond Hill Society and the OHA, 98- year-old Gladys McLatchy, who has just got a street named after her in Richmond Hill. Also at the table was long-time Nobleton Women's Institute member Mary Anne Merritt.

Many thanks goes to the many people who brought in all the good food, and special thanks to Jean Keane, who again, cooked the big turkey to perfection.

Thanks also to the very dedicated King Girl Guides, who cleaned up and did the dishes afterward. Thank you — you did a good job.

Also thank you goes to the volunteers who sat up and decorated the hall for the event.

President Kate Agosta made some special presentations. Long-time member and past president Sheila Jarvis received the Ontario Horticultural Association's Services Awards Certificate. This is the highest honour a society can bestow on a member. It is monitored by the district directors and only one certificate can be given a year. Joan Jackaman was presented with a life membership certificate for her many years of dedication to the society. Communities in Bloom chair Lynda Rogers was presented with the President's Awards Certificate. Past-president and publicity chair, Hans Nielsen, also received the President's Award.

More on the AGM next week.
