Nobleton Notes Nobleton Skating Club Nobleton Skating Club is holding registration for the winter skating sessions beginning in January. Registration will be held in the arena lobby today (Wednesday) from 4 to 7:30 p.m., and this Saturday (Dec. 9) from 8:30 until 11a.m. The sessions begin Jan. 8 and run until March 31. This year, the club has added several new classes. It now offers pre-power, advanced adult group and adult power classes. Canskate sessions are offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturday mornings. Book Fair at St. Paul's This morning (Wednesday) is the final presentation of St. Paul's Christmas pageant - Miracle on Main Street, at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to join this special presentation for the local schools. Join us this evening for our mid-week service at 7 p.m. This service lasts approximately 20 minutes and is ideal for those in the community who can not make a regular Sunday morning service. The Youth Group will be travelling to the Operation Christmas Child Warehouse in Kitchener Friday night to help check shoeboxes before they are shipped to their final destinations. Anyone interested in joining is asked to meet at the church at 5:45 p.m. The Saturday morning men's Bible study continues, starting at 8:30 a.m. Our annual Book Fair is to be held this Saturday (Dec. 9) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come see a huge selection of gifts, cards, CDs, DVDs, calendars, wrapping paper and much, much more. Enjoy a coffee or tea and some "goodies" also while you are in out of the cold. This Monday (Dec. 11), the Women's Missionary Society will be hosting their annual Christmas party with guest speaker Jeanne Snider. This event begins at 7 p.m. and everyone is welcome. St. Mary's CWL Christmas family day Come on and have some good family fun at the ninth annual family Christmas day, to be held this Sunday (Dec. 10). It starts at 11:30 a.m. with a sleigh ride for the children, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. There are crafts for the children, hot chocolate on arrival at Nobleton Community Centre and Arena, a hot lunch served by the Catholic Women's League, Christmas carolling and much more. Sears Christmas colouring contest It's that time of year again, for the annual Sears Christmas colouring contest. The theme this year is "How my family celebrates Christmas, and the contest is for children aged five to 12. They can use crayons, paint, pens, pencils or chalk. No help from parents, please. Entries can be dropped off at the Sears store in Nobleton at 5870 King Rd. Children from all schools in Nobleton are welcome to enter. The contest runs until Dec. 22. For more information, contact Frances at (905) 859-6654. Seniors' euchre Nov. 28 euchre winners were Shirley Jessop, Barb Lalisbury, Cathy Kiekebelt, Joy Lostchuck, Hazel Harris, Bill Groombridge. Lucky draw winners were Sandy Tower, Walter Bell and Margaret Cook. The next euchre will be Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Drop-in Centre. All are welcome. Men's pick-up hockey The men's league that plays at 10 p.m. Wednesday nights is looking for more players. Players should be 30 and over. Consider joining this truly community event that has been running for many years in town. Horticulture Submitted by Hans Nielsen "Reach for the stars even if you have to stand on a cactus." (Susan Longacre) At the annual dinner awards meeting, held recently by the Nobleton and King City Horticultural Society, the year-end results from the flower shows were reported and the winners rewarded. Show Director Barb Downey organized the awards and made most of the presentations. In the seven shows held by the society this year, the largest show was in June, with 16 people showing 187 exhibits. The total exhibits for the year were about 800 in the seven shows with between seven and 19 exhibitors. Nancy Hopkinson won the Nobleton Women's Institute Cup, which is presented to a member obtaining the most points in the Open Class for the year. She was presented with this most prestigious award by the WI's Mary Anne Merritt. The Oliver Nelson Cup, which is given in honour of the late Olive Nelson, who was a charter member, is given to the member in the novice class who receive the most points. It was won by Susan Beharriell and was presented by Barb Downey. For the most points in any one show for the year, the winner was Nancy Hopkinson in the August show with 69 points. Awards were given for the best in the decorative class in each month and was won by John Arnott for the March show, Roy Elson for April, Nancy Hopkinson for May and October and Amy Fazari for June, August and September. Best in the cultural class was won by Jules Maule-Ffinch for March and Kate Agosta for April, Mary Watson for May, Nancy Hopkinson for June, Tina Stone for August, Amy Fazari for September and John Lesey won best in the cultural class in October. For most points in the bulb section, Kate Agosta was the winner and John Lesey was the winner in both the rose section and the gladiolus section. Congratulations goes to all participants in the flower shows throughout the year and we salute the winners. Also, thank you, goes to all the volunteers who make the shows possible, with their work behind the scenes and the members who come out to the meetings and flower shows.
