Four tonnes of municipal election signs diverted from landfill sites York Region's recycling program diverted more than four tonnes (4,080 kilograms) of election signs from garbage dumps during a recent public drop-off event. Candidates involved in the recent municipal election and their campaign team members were invited to drop off corrugated plastic election signs at the Region's Waste Management Centre in East Gwillimbury. The amount of election signs collected from the recent municipal campaigns was an increase of more than 250 per cent from a similar recycling program offered after the federal election earlier this year. Following the federal election, approximately one tonne (1,150 kilograms) of election signs were collected. The election sign recycling program is an additional way York Region is working to introduce innovative ways of diverting increasing amounts of waste from landfills.
