Christmas is coming fast, and the thought of what to get for the gardener in the family may be of some concern. The following are a few suggestions gleaned from a summer's notebook.

You invest a lot of time and money in your beautiful gardens, but do not know how to protect them from pests. Now you can, with Garden Ghost, an electronic motion detector that keeps cat, skunks, raccoons, squirrels, dogs and other unwanted animals away from your gardens by releasing a spray that contains HFC134a, a scentless gas that is ozonefriendly and 100 per cent safe for humans, animals, plants and the environment. It is available in garden stores. Visit www.gardenghost. com for more information.

Another device is the Scare-Crow a motion activated sprinkler. When the Scare-Crow sees an animal, it instantly sprays a pulsating three-second water burst. Scare-Crow is easy to install; just connect a garden hose and plant its stake in the ground.

A device for weeding is the Weed Torch. This torch is the most suitable way to rapidly rid your gardens, lawns, walkways and sidewalks of weeds. It is a blowtorch attached to a propane tank, the regulator lets you set the exact flame intensity you want. It can also be used to remove ice from walkways. This device must be operated in accordance with local bylaws.

Another Christmas present that keeps on giving all year is a membership in the Horticultural Society. For $15, you get admission to hear seven top-notch speakers, inspiring garden tours, community projects, summer fun tours, flower shows and many more activities with fellow green thumbs. A membership card also gives you up to 10 per cent off your purchase price at select nurseries. For membership details, please call Tina at (905) 833-0707 or go to www.altflora.com/nobleton
