Lining up land for sewage stations
By Bill Rea

There were no public comments recently on Township plans for facilities connected with the new sewer system planned for Nobleton.

Council enacted a bylaw declaring certain lands surplus, allowing a block of land to be conveyed to York Region to accommodate the main pumping station at the end of Janet Street (at the southeast corner of the property containing parkland adjoining the local arena). It also approved easements to access the property slated for a wetland for outflow from the system to pass through on the way to the Humber River. It's to go about half a mile south of the end of the 11th Concession Road.

In her report to council, Township Clerk Chris Somerville stated there was a bit of urgency to get this task taken care of because of the shortage of Township and regional council meetings before the November municipal elections.

She added the wetland concept has been promoted by the Toronto Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and supported by the Region "as an environmentally-friendly means of discharging treated effluent, rather than just by a pipe into the river."

Councillor Jane Underhill said she was "absolutely thrilled" that Nobleton will be getting an alternative sewer system. "That's what the King City residents wanted."

Councillor Linda Pabst agreed, lamenting that the flows in the East Humber River were not sufficient to accommodate them. Underhill countered there is lots of room around King City for constructed wetlands.
