Master gardeners have useful advice
By Angie Maccarone (905) 859-5174 Horticulture Submitted by Hans Nielsen

"Along the line of smokey hills, the crimson forest stands, and all the day the bluejay calls, throughout the autumn lands." (William Wilfred Campbell, 1889)

Master Gardeners is a volunteer organization dedicated to public service by encouraging public interest in gardening and horticulture.

Ontario's master gardeners volunteer at least 30 hours annually and must initially complete three horticultural courses through the University of Guelph, as well as attend technical workshops, to be certified. As well , they must keep a library of books on garden and horticultural matters.

Many master gardeners go on to give talks to garden groups, give advice at garden shows and garden tours and judge community gardens, as well as give advice to the members of horticultural societies.

The Nobleton and King City Horticultural Society is very lucky to have, among its members, several Master Gardeners, as well as many veteran gardeners and specialists, who can help the membership with their garden problems. For information about the Master Gardener program, contact volunteer coordinator Peter Cox at pcox1@rogers.com

The society members and the public are reminded of the society plant sale coming up this Saturday (Oct. 14) at 10 a.m. The sale will be conducted on the lawn on the south side of the King City Senior's Centre, 30 Fisher Street and adjacent to the arena, and will be held at the same time the King City Lions are conducting their annual auction in the arena parking lot. Plants for the sale can be dropped off ahead of the sale at Blair Day, 29 Fisher St. Phone (905) 833-5173 for more information.

Please, pot and mark the plants if possible, and no invasive plants.

The plant sale is a fundraiser for the society.

vitamins and supplements

The Nobleton Women's Institute (WI) will meet next Thursday (Oct. 19) at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Hall at 19 Old King Rd.

A very interesting speaker, a pharmacist from Pharmas are Drug Store will enlighten the group with very important knowledge on vitamins and supplements. Many people are more aware of the need and proper use of vitamins and supplements and are asking questions and need answers to their concerns. We are sure our pharmacist from our own home town can give us great information.

Gloria Jansons and Cathy Ball are convening the October meeting on Family and Health. Roll Call will be Where were you born? Motto is Good beginnings - Great People.

The WI invites the ladies of the community to our meetings. Please do join us for good speakers, friendship and fun. Sweets and cup of tea will follow the meeting.
