Class of '06 take their diplomas and dreams from KCSS
By Bill Rea

Alison Mumford delivered the Valedictory address Thursday at the annual Commencement at King City Secondary School.
There was no shortage of pride, nostalgia and good feeling Thursday night in the halls of King City Secondary School.

Members of the Class of 2006 returned for one last hurrah, as well as to collect their diplomas and hear words of praise for the faculty who taught them for four years.

Principal Teresa Micone stressed it was an evening for celebrating the success of the graduating class.

But there were others who she celebrated too, including the school staff members who organized the event, and the families of the graduates.

"You have watched these young people develop," Micone remarked. "You have put up with many inconveniences."

"You have shared their triumphs and you have ached with pain at their failures," Micone told the parents in the audience. "You have watched them grow into young adults, ready to take on the world."

"You are ready to take on the world of tomorrow," she told the grads, as she urged them to go forth with good character.

The Class of '06 at KCSS was in fine form as they filed into Thursday's Commencement ceremonies.
Micone also assured them the staff at the school would be cheering them on from the sidelines. "You inspire us and we applaud you," she said.

In her address to her classmates, Valedictorian Alison Mumford recalled their early days at KCSS.

"The school seemed a little bigger then," she said.

"We are starting a new adventure," she said, urging her fellow grads to include learning and having fun in their goals.

"It is impossible to describe everyone's experience at King because everyone is different," Mumford commented, but said everyone had some similar experiences or promises made and broken, leaving assignments to the last minute, and silly crushes on boys, girls and teachers, as well as being stressed by such things as Grade 12 calculus.

But she also remembered the students being there for each other.

"We'll always remember the green and yellow hallways, the familiar faces and the great times," she said.

"Take your time and enjoy life," she urged the grads. "Continue to wish, hope and dream."

Trustee Susan Plamondon brought greetings on behalf of the York Region District School Board.
"Congratulations, Class of 2006," Mumford concluded. "We made it! Go Lions go!"

The following is a list of the members of the KCSS Class of '06, along with those who received special recognition Thursday.
