Cober does have a part to play in this election campaign First and foremost, we have to congratulate Bill Cober on his re-election to King Township council, by acclamation. It is a statement of voter satisfaction when a person is returned to office in an election, and it's ever so much stronger when no one even steps up to challenge. That being said, we also have to compliment Cober on his announcement that he will spend some time on the hustings, encouraging constituents to get out and vote. While voters in Ward 4 have their councillor seat already filled (along with their trustee position if they are Catholic school supporters), there is still competition to see who will fill the office of mayor, as well as who will be the local representative on the York Region District School Board. As Cober himself pointed out, choosing these officials amount to important decisions, and the input of the electorate is important. Presumably, Cober has formed some opinion on who he favours to be mayor of King Township for the next four years, but we will let him decide if he wants to make a public announcement to that effect, and then let him do it in his own good time. But we are also aware that with the local councillor race already decided, people in the ward might decide not to bother getting out to vote. That would be a big mistake, and one we hope the majority of voters in Ward 4 don't make. For that matter, we hope all the voters in King get out and mark their ballots Nov. 13. A voter turn out of 100 per cent would certainly be something to see and brag about, wouldn't it? We're glad that Cober has seen this need and we endorse his efforts to try and get his constituents involved and out to the voting stations. Anyone good enough to get acclaimed would naturally understand the importance of the rest of the vote getting out. |
