YRT/Viva Ridership climbs 10.8 per cent in 2006

York Region Transit (YRT) and Viva Rapid Transit continue to enjoy significant ridership gains with an increase of 10.8 per cent in revenue ridership to the end of July, according to York Region.

More than 936,000 additional YRT/Viva fares were purchased this year compared to 2005.

More than 9.6 million revenue riders have used YRT/Viva this year (January to July) compared to 8.6 million revenue riders for the same time period in 2005.

Additionally, riders are enjoying the Hop on - Hop off policy implemented last year. This allows riders a two-hour window to board and disembark buses while using a single fare. Passengers are also allowed to transfer between York Region Transit services and

Viva Rapid Transit free-ofcharge to assist in making transit travel more affordable, convenient and efficient.

While ridership for July 2006 stands at more than 1.2 million, based on revenue ridership, total boarding numbers are much higher. The total boardings include revenue riders, transfers and individuals boarding the bus multiple times while utilizing the Region's twohour Hop on-Hop off policy, and surpassed the 1.7 million mark for july and 12.8 ,million for the year to date.

YRT and Viva are operated as a single system, with Viva handling rapid transit service in four key corridors, including Yonge Street and Highway 7. YRT transports passengers throughout the Region and acts as a "feeder" to Viva.
