Gord Kerr planning to run for trustee's position
By Bill Rea

Vandorf resident Gord Kerr has worked for years to promote parental involvement in education. Now he wants to work from the board table.

Kerr, 44, is running for the local seat on the York Region District School Board, representing King and Aurora.

"I'm a strong believer in public education," declared

the father of two children who attend school in Aurora.

He is also founder and director of The Parent Involvement Centre, and was appointed to the Parent

Voice in Education Project in 2005, which looked for ways to get parents more involved. He is currently vice-chair of the school council at Dr. G. W. Williams Secondary School in Aurora and is a member of the board's Parent Engagement Advisory Committee.

In addition Kerr said he helped set up a Web site aimed at helping people obtain information about school councils in 2000. He had been frustrated that the Ministry of Education hadn't been providing the information, so he set up the mechanism himself.

Kerr is employed in the marketing field, and works for a major bank.

This is the first time he has sought elected office, and he said his chances will largely depend on the field in the race. While he's done a lot of work in the area of parental involvement, he agreed a lot of people in the broader community wouldn't know him.

"I know I'm willing and able and ready to go," he declared. "I'm thrilled about the expertise that exists in our board."
