Horticulture Submitted by Hans Nielsen

"Tis the middle watch of summer's night - The Earth is dark, but the heavens are bright." (Rodman Drake)

There was a good turnout at the Nobleton and King City Horticultural Society's Aug. 28 meeting and flower show, held at the Nobleton Community Hall.

The guest speaker was Koidu Sulev from the famous Richters Greenhouses and Nursery, the herb specialists in Goodwood. Sulev gave a very interesting talk and seminar about the history of herbs, how they were found and where they originally grew. She used many little vignettes to describe the events that lead up to the discovery of some herbs and spices throughout the world going back hundreds of years. She also brought in many different plants and samples for the members to look at and to purchase and she did a brisk business after the talk.

Sulev was born in Estonia, but grew up in Sweden, the home of the famous Magnus Nilson, Echinacea breeder and gardner.

There was a big flower show with 155 entries from 15 exhibitors, judged by Carol Price of Bolton. She had a tough job in a high quality show. Most points in show were won by Nancy Hopkinson (Nobleton) with 67 points. Her neighbour, Amy Fazari (Nobleton) won second with 52 points and Roz Elson (King City) came in third with 44. Am Fazari won best in show in the decorative class for her beautiful arrangement "All things bright and beautiful," and Tina Stone (King City) won best in the cultural class for her amazing big double begonia.

The evening ended with a social get-together over coffee, tea and sweets, thanks to the refreshment committee of Jean Keane, with help from Maria Pedersen, Maude Featherstone and others. The members also had a chance to enjoy the flower show while exchanging garden ideas and friendly chats.

Please note, the program for the September meeting has been changed, Lorraine Mennen from Pathway to Perennials will now by the guest speaker.
