By Angie Maccarone (905) 859-5174

Nobleton Lions

Golfers, mark Sept. 16 on your calendars.

The Lions Noblekids Charity Golf Tournament is up and running again this year. As the name says, the tournament is now a charity event, with all proceeds earmarked for kids' organizations in and around Nobleton, including Cubs and Scouts, Brownies and Guides, minor baseball and the kids Christmas skating party with Santa, to name a few.

The tournament will be held at The Highlands Golf Club in Bradford (25 minutes north of Nobleton). We are limited to 20 teams or 80 golfers, so contact a Lions club member soon to reserve a spot, or a team. Start times will be between 8:15 and 9:15 a.m. Corporate hole sponsorships are available at $125 per hole, and team sponsorships are also welcome. All will be publicly acknowledged.

Contact a Lions club member to sign up.

The entry fee is $100 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, a meal of steak or chicken, and all golfers will receive a prize.

For details, contact Ray Castator at (905) 859-4138 or Dave George at (905) 951-8368.

The Lions Club is seeking new members at this time. If you are interested in helping your community become a better place to live while having lots of fun, please call Greg Hill at (905) 8590895.

Nobleton United Church

The Nobleton United Church Women will be holding the first meeting of the fall season Sept. 6.

Please join us at 12:30 for lunch and fellowship. Ruth Reesor of Schomberg will be our guest speaker. Ruth has a rural background; she is the daughter of a harness maker and will speak of days gone by. We look forward to seeing all our members and church friends at this very special meeting.

"Experience is something you do not get until just after you need it." (Tony Curcio)

Mother nature tells us the best time to seed a new lawn is in the fall.

The preferred seeding time is when temperature and moisture are most favourable for germination and growth. Lawn grasses prefer seeding in late August to end of September when temperatures are in the 10 to 20 Celsius (50 to 70 F) range and because of the cool moist period the following spring. An alternative choice is spring seeding in April to mid June.

For over seeding or new seeding under mature shade trees (maples, etc.) the best time to seed is early in the spring, as soon as the soil can be worked and before the leaves come out. The seed will not start before the soil temperature is in 10 C range. If there is over 60 per cent shade, do not use Kentucky bluegrass, but use a mixture of fescues and turf type ryegrass. It may need to be reseeded every year or planted with shade tolerant plants.

When choosing a lawn mixture, make sure it is all branded seed, not common seed. Seed in the low price range has a low purity and germination range as well. Look for seed that is Endophyte enhanced. Endophyte is a fungus that lives within, but is not necessarily parasitic on another plant. The presence of an endopytic fungus produces no known adverse effects to the host plant, but provides many advantages which enhance turf grass performance.

In nature, plants which contain endophyte are able to survive insect attack. Plants containing endorphyte fungi have shown

resistance to sod webworms, armyworms, billbugs, argentine stern weevil and chinch bugs. Please note, Endophyte enhanced grass will fight the chinch bug but it must not be fed to livestock, such as horses, cattle and sheep in big amounts and should not be included in livestock, mixtures. It will not kill, but it will cause them to "stagger". It is harmless to humans and pets and much safer than spray for bugs.

In full sun try some white clover, mixed in with the grass. It is drought tolerant and its root will add natural nitrogen to the lawn.

Nitrogen is the first number on the fertilizer bag. Lots happening soon
