Les Pengelly will run to get back on school board Schomberg resident Leslie Pengelly enjoyed serving as local school trustee in the 1990s so much that he's planning to seek his old job again. The retired police officer has announced he will seek election as local representative on the York Region District School Board. If successful, he will replace current Trustee Susan Plamondon, who has announced she will not be seeking another term. Pengelly was elected to the board in 1991, and served two terms. "I enjoyed it very much," he commented, adding he thinks he still has a contribution to make. He recalled that he was a founding member of the committee that helped form the Safe Schools Committee at the board. He said he sees the need today to maintain that kind of security. Pengelly was chief of police in King before the formation of York Regional Police, and he then served as an inspector with the Regional department until his retirement in 1980. He still does some bylaw enforcement work a couple of days per week for the Town or Richmond Hill. "The rest of my time is free to offer to the community," he said. Pengelly said he has talked to Plamondon about his plans, adding he wouldn't have run against her. He also stated his chances of election look pretty good right now. "At the moment, there's nobody else running," he said. |
