Horticulture Submitted by Hans Nielsen

"Through sunny days and yellow weeks; with clouds that melt in tears; the glory of the harvest speaks; in all the silken ears." (J. Hazard Hartzell) The Nobleton and King City recently held an executive meeting and several items of interest were discussed. It was decided that the Society would purchase a Hackberryand a Sugar Maple tree to be planted by the society members on October 28th, 2006 in the Hill Farm Meadow Park as a memorial to two society life members who have passed away with the last year. It was decided to have a fall plant sale in connection with the Lions Auctions sale in King City, being held in October of this year. Members and the public are asked to keep that in mind when they redo their gardens and donate any, good, plants to the sale. The money raised is being used to plant tree and flowers in the community. The society has several ongoing projects in the community, the hosta garden at the King City Arena is going well, the garden at the Four Corners has been put back together again after much construction work on the bridges. The final plantings are postponed until the fall when the water restrictions are lifited on this project. The gardens at the Seniors Centre is going well, again this year, as are the gardens in Wellesley Park.

The lilac garden suffered a setback this last winter as a snowmobiler drove through the plantings and killed some plants. The society volunteers brought 3 new plants as a replacement but like to remind the public that the society funds comes from fundraising and it is volunteers who do the plantings for the enjoyment of all in the community and any other guests who may come by. Please help us to keep the parks beautiful. In Nobleton, much work has been done around St. Alban's Anglican Church the last few years and a monastery garden is flourishing well. There was no direct report on the other projects in Nobleton. The volunteer members are reminded to report their volunteer hours to Maud Featherstone. Last year the society members put in over sixteen hundred volunteer hours in the community and an annual report goes to OHA for the records.
