Exciting recent action played in Schomberg Soccer Club July 27 saw Schomberg's Pete's Donuts under-8 girls play the King City Lions Club team at King City. With many of the girls away the team had to work very hard, but the King City Lions Club was more then they could handle, giving the girls a 6-1 loss. Congratulations to the girls for a great effort, especially Katrina Hermanns who scored a goal and Lauren Fraser for her assist. Keep up the great work red stars! Allstone wins Two evenly matched Schomberg under-8 boys' teams matched up for exciting play last Thursday at Pottageville Park. The Allstone team took an early lead in the first half with a goal each by Derek Biersteker and Aiden BeloNascimento. After many hard-fought break-away attempts at goal, Nicholas Bigelli scored the first marker for Den Bosch and Finchley. The speedy and agile Derek Biersteker retaliated with a third goal for the Allstone team, making it 3-1 for Allstone going into the second half. Coach Sean Nugent's Den Bosch and Finchley team came on strong early in the second half with a quick break-away goal by Jakob Jung after only a minute of play into the second half. The ever-consistent effort by Ryan Schmied paid off as he scored with a hard kick to even the game for Den Bosch and Finchley. Despite the excruciating heat, both teams continued to play with concerted effort and enthusiasm, with many shots on net by both sides. It was the excellent goal-keeping of Thomas Rea, for Den Bosch and Finchley, that kept the constant pressure of the Allstone team from paying off. With only minutes remaining in the game, Aiden Belo-Nascimento found an opening and drove a hard kick at Thomas Rea who valiantly blocked the shot but Aiden was quick with the rebound to score, giving the Allstone team a 43 victory. Also on July 27, Schomberg's Glen Hulse Plumbing under-10 boys' team played King City's Assante team at Wellesly Park. In the first half, Glen Hulse Plumbing held the balance of pressure due to some good passing, but many chances were squandered as shots either went wide or were put straight at the Assante keeper. Glen Hulse kept up the pressure and Steven Rode was able to weave in past the defense and tuck away the game's first goal. Late in the half, Mitchell Harknett showed how to pick the corner of the goal to give Glen Hulse a two-goal lead. If not for some solid goal keeping by Assante's Nicholas Westerhoek, the score may have been more lopsided. In the second half, Glen Hulse kept up the pressure, but Assante's keeper Kurtis Mallette was more than equal to the task in the early going. A third goal could not be found until an excellent cross was delivered by Graeme Nugent and Trystin Gunraj made no mistake from close in. They were well on their way to a win with Blair Monaghan adding a fourth. Noteworthy was the play of Michael Leigh and Conor McCabe who could always be counted on defensively for Glen Hulse. Giovanni Greco was ever dangerous for Assante and finally had his team on the board with a break-out strike late in the game. The final score was a 4-1 win for Glen Hulse. |
