Horticulture

Submitted by Hans

"Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier." (Mother Teresa)

The first horticultural society in Ontario was organized in 1834.

For many years, societies were part of the Ontario Agricultural Association, but in 1906 a separate horticultural association was formed.

The Ontario Horticultural Association is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. It is the umbrella organization for the 180 horticultural societies in Ontario.

OHA, along with its member societies, have an outstanding record of accomplishments. It played a prominent role in having the white Trillium Grandiflorum adopted as the floral emblem of the Province of Ontario.

To celebrate the anniversary, many members throughout the province planted a special, purple tulip last fall to bloom in the spring of 2006 and on March 8, Canada Post issued four new domestic rate stamps (51 cents). The stamps illustrate the four main types of gardens, including sunny flower gardens, shade gardens, rock gardens and water gardens.

OHA also made a colourful poster to display at local garden centers, libraries and community centers. Look for them in your community.

The 280 societies in OHA, represent more than 40,000 members throughout Ontario, including the Nobleton and King City Horticultural Society, which was formed and joined in 1958 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2008.

OHA will be holding its 100th anniversary convention in Ottawa, Aug. 11, 12 and 13 at the Crown Plaza Hotel and Conference Centre. Several members and delegates from the Nobleton/King Society will be attending.

The motto for the convention is One Hundred Years and Still Growing. It promises to be an interesting event with several special speakers, workshops, flower show and outings.
