Churches to hold processions
By Angie Maccarone (905) 859-5174

"Generosity. The more one gives, the more one has." (Chinese Proverb)

A suggestion regarding plans for a new garden. Some gardeners like to make a vivid colourful garden, while others plant a peace garden, a place to sit and relax and reflect.

Another idea comes to mind - a healing garden. Why not plant a labyrinth? Any plant material can be used to plant a labyrinth, such a grasses, bushes and flowers. A labyrinth is an ancient archetypical symbol. It has been carved into stone, cut into turf, woven into baskets, or laid in tiles

Nielsen in the floor. Its exact origin is unknown yet it has surfaced around the globe in various forms and time through the past 3,500 years.

A labyrinth differs from a maze in that there is one way into the center and the same way out. A labyrinth is a single path. One path to the center and the same path back to the entrance. It is a journey in which one reaches the center allowing the right brain and creative side of one self to be fully engaged.

Labyrinths are being used in special education facilities to address attention deficit disorders, learning disabilities and autism. They have been incorporated successfully in treatment programs for Alzheimer's and are being used in psychotherapeutic treatment of depression. Initial research has shown patients who walk their labyrinth regularly show decreased blood pressure, high degrees of optimism and lowered heart rates. Labyrinths are also currently in use in association with therapeutic institutions to reduce postoperative anxiety and therefore reduce the need for sedatives and to decreased blood pressure in cardiac patients.

Labyrinths can be located just about anywhere. The paths can be diverted to go around a tree or other natural features such as rocks, boulders and topography. Adding a labyrinth to a community indicates a commitment to helping people to find healing on all levels; physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual.

Consider planting one in your garden.
