Underhill to seek re-election to council This would be Underhill's third term at the council table, if successful. She was first elected in 1997, then ran for mayor in the 2000 campaign, falling just 25 votes short of unseating Margaret Black. She returned to council in 2003 as representative for the ward that takes in much of King City, as well as Kettleby and surrounding "Despite 'the pipe,' which I continue to believe is unjustified, I have been moved to run again by the enthusiastic encouragement of constituents who share my concerns for the relentless urbanization of our community," Underhill remarked in making her announcement. "We must have a council that will defend the Official Plan, protect both the natural and built heritage elements of the township, and provide much needed transparency regarding council decisions and the decision-making process," she added. Underhill said her platform will emphasize the need to safeguard the community from poorly managed growth. "Water quality and quantity, traffic speeds and volume, and proper parkland dedications are just a few of my most pressing concerns," she said. "Too frequently, council has disregarded Ward 5's needs in each of these areas, and I'm running to continue the struggle to keep King green and livable for all township residents." Underhill has made her home in Ward 5 for more than four decades, during which time she has been actively involved in countless community activities, as well as supporting initiatives to maintain and enhance the natural environment of King for all inhabitants. |
