Tidy up every Tuesday There's never a bad day to pick up litter, and a Tuesday is as good a day as any. Lynda Rogers, who chairs the King Township communities in Bloom efforts, is encouraging all observe Tidy Tuesdays and pick up trash as they walk. "Doing that much just once a week will make a difference," she observed. "Beep your horn whenever you see a person picking up trash, destroying the street weeds or working in a garden. Beep whenever you see a person in a 'King Blooms' Tshirt." Rogers pointed out the Township-wide April cleanup day removed some garbage from the area. Volunteer adults and students picked up 310 bags of garbage and 36 bags of recyclables in two hours April 29! Area schools conducted clean-ups as part of Earth Week activities. Many more folks were out along the side roads doing the same. Mel Van Sickle leads the Ward Against Litter in King (WALK) crusade every year to clean up the Highway 400 car parks in the spring and the fall. "Volunteers were dismayed to find trash such as used oil containers, re-bar, thousands of cigarette butts and tires dumped there carelessly," Rogers observed. "King is Beautiful but it needs constant care to remain at its best," she added. "Each of us needs to share the work to 'Keep King Clean.'" |
