King has plenty of culture to celebrate It's the first time something like this has been tried, but it's becoming clear that Arts Festival King, which continues until this coming Sunday, is a revealing exercise. It's telling us just how rich the artistic and cultural scene in King Township really is. There have already been a number of exciting events, including a couple of historic tours, a craft show, musical performances, lectures, and Sunday's Mayor's Cultural Soiree at the King campus of Seneca College. And there's a lot more to come. There are a whole host of creative workshops planned for the days to come. One more lecture is scheduled for tonight (Wednesday) at YMCA's Cedar Glen on the history of silent film, and the weekend promises some great music at the annual King Swings at Daniel's of Nobleton. And to top it all off, Studio Tour King will run all weekend, offering patrons the chance to meet 20 talented local artists and see how they go about creating the magical works that they do. There have been many, many comments expressed over the last couple of days, both about the incredible amount of work members of Arts Society King (ASK) put in to bring this all about, and about the fantastic results. But we believe York North MPP Julia Munro came closest to summing it all up perfectly. "I think what you have here is the recipe," she told the audience at the Soiree Sunday night, "the recipe for the kind of community that people want to be in." There will be more of this "recipe" to see as the week goes by. Check out the lecture, the music, the workshops and the art. There's a lot of great stuff to see, hear and do. The opportunity has never been better. |
