Van Loan and government commits to protecting lake from invasive species
     York — Simcoe MP Peter Van Loan and the federal government recently announced $38 million in funding over two years for programs under Canada’s Invasive Alien Species Strategy to reduce the risk of invasive animal and plant species introduced to Canada. The funding was announced in Budget 2010.

      Items of an OPP officer’s uniform were reported stolen from his car, which was parked in the lot at Highway 400 and King Road.

Township supports hospitals going under Ombudsman
      The Township will be issuing a report to the Province in support of a Town of Gravenhurst resolution to amend the powers of the Ombudsman. In a letter to the Township (as well as all other municipalities in Ontario), Gravnehurst officials requested support for the move.

CONTRIBUTION FROM VILLAGE ASSOCIATION
     Over the years the Schomberg Village Association has been able to support a number of community groups with proceeds from A Main Street Christmas. At the March 11 AGM, Past President Susanne Prince and President Jane Binions were pleased to present a cheque for $5,000 to Bob Hunt of the fund-raising committee for the new arena to be built in Schomberg.

Shamrock wasn’t always a symbol for Ireland

      York Regional council Thursday received its 2009 Investment Report, which showed more than $62.6 million in investment earnings, representing a 5.14 per cent return from Region’s general fund portfolio for 2009.

Curves Tottenham has a goal of a ton of food for Food Bank donation
      Curves of Tottenham would like to raise more than a ton of food during this year’s annual food drive. Last year, Curves raised and donated more than 1,800 pounds and decided that a ton was an excellent goal to set. This fund-raising effort would benefit the local community through the Tottenham Food Bank.

      The Ontario Trillium Foundation recently granted Family Services York Region (FSYR) $300,000 over four years to develop and implement a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender LGBT) service hub in the region.

     The Schomberg Agricultural Society hosted its sixth annual Farm Tour Saturday. This year marks the 160th Schomberg Fair, so organizers decided the Farm Tour would showcase what they thought was a good representation of agriculture in Schomberg and surrounding area these days.

      Nobleton resident Miranda Hussey said Canada has a lot of catching up to when it comes to being green. Hussey, who spent two weeks in Copenhagen at the recent United Nations climate conference, said Canada is not as well received as they may think they are.

      The next women’s luncheon, hosted by the King Chamber of Commerce, will feature a talk by Christine Picheca. The food editor-at-large of Canadian Living Magazine, Picheca is a selfconfessed foodie and a butcher’s daughter.       The first meeting of 2010 of the Schomberg Horticultural Society will be March 23 at Schomberg Community Hall on Main Street. The speaker will be Donna McMaster, who will give a talk on Clematis. McMaster is a master gardener and has extensive knowledge as a grower.

Drive-Thru raised more than $1,000

      Many thanks for the magnificent support we received for the Coffee Drive-Thru, held last Wednesday at the church, to raise funds for the victims of the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile. The generosity of people was amazing. Just over $1,000 was raised. March 21, our minister Ross Carson will be preaching in Bolton and Su Won Hong will be preaching at York Pines.

Arena project makes more progress
      King council last week removed a restriction on a block of land for the construction of the Schomberg. The staff report, which council received and approved, contained a recommendation to remove the holding symbol on a portion of land in order for the Township to proceed with the construction of the proposed arena, curling facility and fitness centre.
